Senior Nutrition and HIV/AIDS officer for Karonga, Steve Ndau has applauded Story Workshop for training an average of five drama clubs in Theatre for Development (TfD) in each TA in the district saying they are playing a pivotal role in promoting nutrition and sanitation in the communities.

Ndau who is also chair for Karonga District Nutrition Coordinating Committee (DNCC) was speaking when he attended one of the TfD performances in TA Mwirang’ombe in the district which was organized by the community leaders.

“The performance by the drama clubs is just great, especially the involvement of the communities during the performance on the issues being discussed, it is a good way of allowing the communities to develop action plans for their communities on how they can promote nutrition and WASH, it is good we have such structures across the district”, said Ndau.

Commenting on the same, TA Mwirang’ombe, said through theater performances his subordinates are now knowledgeable on the need of having six food groups especially for pregnant women. He said in line with their bylaws in the communities, more men are being called to take a leading role in promoting nutrition and WASH at household level.

“Men are bread winners so they say, as such through these drama performances, men are being encouraged to provide six food groups in their homes, accompany their wives to ANC when pregnant and not selling all the produce for money but keep some for the children to eat. So we appreciate that the drama clubs are promoting same things which we have in our bylaws which is making the communities have adequate information on nutrition and WASH”, said Mwirang’ombe.

Story Workshop has trained an average of five drama clubs in each TA in Karonga who are mobilizing the communities in promoting WASH and Nutrition. The project is being funded by Unicef
